Six consecutive losses by the Philadelphia Eagles might prevent this Week 9 matchup with the New York Giants from being a classic NFC East clash. But the Giants currently lead their division at 4-2-1 and, to stay on top, these are the types of games they have to win.
Adding to the intrigue of this game is Joe Milton III starting at quarterback for the Eagles. Milton, 26, has fascinated fans and coaches going back to his college days because he’s built like a prototype for the position and has a rocket launcher for an arm. But that hasn’t translated into consistent success.

Sunday’s game will be Milton’s first career NFL start. However, he could have a rough time against a Giants pass defense that ranks third in the NFL in yards allowed and sixth in points allowed.
J.J. McCarthy will make his second start for the Giants and might improve upon his performance in last week’s win over the Houston Texans. McCarthy threw for 252 yards and could match or surpass those numbers against the Eagles’ fifth-worst defense in the NFL. Running back Cam Skattebo was ruled out for the game due to a hamstring injury, so Devin Singletary will start against the league’s third-worst rushing defense.

Philadelphia pivoted to Joe Milton under center for Sunday’s game against New York. It is his first career start.
Milton couldn’t get anything going on his first drive. It actually started with him having a false start on the Eagles’ first play of the game.
Philly then had a three-yard run by Saquon Barkley, a five-yard completion from Milton to tight end Dallas Goedert and then an incomplete pass.
The Eagles punted back to New York with nine minutes to go in the first quarter.

New York got the ball first and picked up 45 yards on 10 plays. The drive was highlighted by J.J. McCarthy hitting Isiah Likely for a 27-yard gain down the sideline, and a 17-yard completion to Darnell Mooney.
After two incompletions and a sack, the Giants settled for a 53-yard field goal, which was made.

The New York Giants will be without top running back Cam Skattebo in Week 9, who’s dealing with a hamstring injury suffered late in Week 7 ahead of the team’s bye week. Expect Devin Singletary to be heavily involved in the offense without Skattebo and fellow running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the mix, who landed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The Philadelphia Eagles will start quarterback Joe Milton III this weekend against the New York Giants, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Milton takes over for Tanner McKee, who was called on to fill in for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is out indefinitely due to blood clots in his lungs.
This will be Milton’s first career NFL start, and his first game action for Philadelphia since the franchise signed him away from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad on Oct. 16.
Milton, 26, spent his collegiate career between Michigan and Tennessee from 2018 to 2023. The Patriots drafted the quarterback in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
He hasn’t had many opportunities to play, but when he has, he’s impressed with his arm strength.
Milton took the field for the first time during Week 18 of the 2024 season, coming on for Drake Maye. The quarterback threw for 241 yards and a touchdown, plus 16 yards and another score on the ground. After the season, the Patriots traded him to the Cowboys.
