Marshall Manning leads first touchdown drive as Baylor routs rival McCallie

Marshall Manning may only be in his freshman year but Baylor head coach Erik Kimrey noted early on that his quarterback of the future would get plenty of playing time this season.

On Friday night, Oct. 2, he got playing time against one of the Red Raiders’ biggest rivals and led his first touchdown-scoring drive of his young high school career in a lopsided, 49-7 win over McCallie.

The son of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, Marshall returned to the field last week in a 45-17 win over Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) after missing multiple weeks with a foot injury that had kept him out since Baylor’s season-opener.

On Friday night against McCallie, entered into the game with four minutes remaining in the third quarter and Baylor leading by 35. He completed a short pass to 2028 four-star tight end Braxton Rein that turned into a 16-yard completion.

His next pass flew over Rein’s head for an incompletion and four-star Ole Miss quarterback commit Keegan Croucher returned for the final two minutes of the third quarter.

Croucher’s night would be done once the fourth quarter began and, for the second week in a row, Marshall was called upon to lead the Red Raiders’ offense for the entire fourth quarter.

Baylor began the fourth quarter on the McCallie 22-yard line and when he passed again, Marshall connected with Rein for a 4-yard completion.

Facing a third-and-11, Marshall corralled a high snap and as he was getting hit, lobbed up a pass to JP Eto’o who hauled it in and stumbled, but picked up the first down.
