A powerful nor’easter that’s drifting near the New Jersey coastline Sept. 27 will continue to bring coastal impacts and unsettled weather from the Mid-Atlantic to New England through Sept. 28, the National Weather Service said.
Strong winds, heavy rain and flooding have already contributed to one death in New York, regional power outages and widespread travel disruptions as the nor’easter continued battering the Northeast, AccuWeather reported.
A full moon is also happening this weekend, Weather.com reported, which is exacerbating the coastal flooding situation.
Conditions will gradually ease later Sept. 27 into early this week, the weather service predicted.
Wide-reaching impacts so far
According to New York City officials, 56-year-old Leighton Brown, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority, died when a tree fell on him in Brooklyn.
Across the region, the storm has flooded roads and homes, prompted water rescues, disrupted travel and left tens of thousands of residents without power in the Northeast.
Strong winds over 70 mph were recorded in Surf City, New Jersey, while as much as 4-6 inches of rain has been recorded along coastal cities from New Jersey to Massachusetts, according to AccuWeather.
Before shifting north, the storm also brought 50 mph wind gusts and coastal and highway flooding along the Outer Banks and Norfolk, Virginia.
Dangerous beach conditions, gusty winds and heavy rain still to come
Even though the highest winds have passed, strong rip currents, rough surf and significant beach erosion will make for dangerous beach conditions from the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic into southern New England through at least the evening of Sept. 27, NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center said in an online forecast.
Strong wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph remain possible Sept. 27 from New Jersey to Long Island, which may lead to additional power outages and tree damage.
Heavy rain may also lead to isolated inland flooding from northern New Jersey into southern New England through Sept. 28. An additional 1-2 inches of rain remains still possible from New Jersey to coastal Maine, AccuWeather said, with some pockets of 2-4 inches possible in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Throughout the day on Sept. 28, the weakened nor’easter will continue to sit right on or just off the coast, with rain showers and some gusty winds lingering over New England, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, including New York City, Weather.com said.
Heavier rainfall is expected for Boston, but this rain shouldn’t be as intense as the rain was over the weekend.
