OpenAI has expanded OpenAI Academy with new role-based courses for developers, organizational leaders, educators and college students, adding structured learning paths around how different groups use AI in practice.
The expanded portfolio builds on Apply AI at Work, OpenAI’s existing pathway for workplace AI skills, and introduces dedicated routes for people building with its technology, leading AI adoption and using AI in teaching and higher education.
Learners work through practical tasks rather than studying AI concepts in isolation. Completing a course and passing its assessment earns an OpenAI Academy course badge intended to demonstrate what the learner has covered.
Lois Newman, who works in Customer Education at OpenAI, said on LinkedIn that the courses are designed around applying AI to real work, “whether they’re improving a business workflow, building with Codex and the OpenAI API, developing an AI strategy, or planning a class.”
Organizations can select individual learning paths based on the roles and skills they want to develop rather than deploying the same training across an entire workforce.
Educator and college student courses focus on practical use
The Teach and Learn with AI pathway includes separate courses for educators and college students.
AI for Educators asks teachers to work with materials they have permission to use to plan classes, create activities or assessments and adapt communications for students, teaching assistants or colleagues.
Educators are expected to review ChatGPT outputs against their own learning objectives, source materials and requirements, with the teacher retaining responsibility for deciding what is ultimately used.
AI for College Students is built around academic and early career tasks. Activities include turning readings and deadlines into study plans, assigning roles within group projects, reviewing drafts against assignment requirements and preparing for applications or interviews.
OpenAI says the course also focuses on helping students decide what information to bring into ChatGPT and how to review the final result rather than simply accepting an AI-generated response.
Education institutions can combine those courses with OpenAI’s AI Foundations training when building broader AI skills programs.
Developers and leaders get separate learning paths
The Build with AI pathway targets developers and technical teams working with Codex or the OpenAI API.
Its courses cover planning and implementing software changes, reviewing quality and building AI products using areas such as solution design, evaluations, agents and information retrieval.
OpenAI says the pathway is designed to help technical teams move beyond experimentation toward operating AI systems in production.
For organizational leaders, Lead AI Adoption focuses on the management decisions around AI rather than model development.
Its AI Leadership course covers identifying where AI could create business value, linking projects to organizational priorities, assigning ownership and governance, and building an initial AI adoption strategy and roadmap.
Apply AI at Work remains the broader pathway for knowledge workers. Learners start with areas such as writing clear instructions and supplying context before progressing toward repeatable workflows and larger tasks involving agents, checkpoints and human review.
Organizations can build courses into existing training
OpenAI is also positioning Academy as a resource that organizations can incorporate into onboarding, transformation programs and workforce development.
A company could, for example, use Apply AI at Work for general employee training while offering Build with AI to technical staff and AI Leadership to people responsible for strategy and organizational change.
The OpenAI Academy Deployment Guide provides recommendations on introducing courses, involving managers and leaders, encouraging participation and tracking progress.
OpenAI says the courses will continue to be updated as its models, products and guidance change.
