Philips has named Shez Partovi as its Chief AI Officer and appointed Laura Matz as Chief Innovation & Technology Officer, marking two senior leadership changes across its artificial intelligence, innovation and technology functions. Partovi will take on the newly created AI position while continuing to lead the Enterprise Informatics business, and Matz will oversee the company’s wider innovation and technology agenda.
Partovi Takes AI Role
Partovi’s mandate as Chief AI Officer will extend across Philips, covering the use of artificial intelligence in products for clinicians and patients as well as its application within the organisation.
He has also served as Chief Business Leader, Enterprise Informatics since October 2022, with responsibility for a global business carrying a USD 1.5 billion P&L. He previously held the position of Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer at Philips from March 2021 to September 2026.
The latest change shifts his primary technology focus towards AI while retaining his responsibilities for Enterprise Informatics.
Healthcare Technology Experience
Before joining Philips, Partovi was Head of Worldwide Business Development for Healthcare and Life Sciences at Amazon Web Services from May 2018 to April 2021.
Earlier, he held senior positions at Dignity Health, including Chief Digital Officer, Chief Health Information Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer. A physician by training, he previously worked as a neuroradiologist and has also founded five start-ups.
His career has covered healthcare delivery, digital transformation, enterprise technology and business leadership.
Matz Leads Innovation
Matz joins Philips after serving as Chief Science & Technology Officer at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, since June 2021. Her responsibilities there covered innovation and digitalisation across the Life Science, Healthcare and Electronics businesses.
She also founded Athinia, a data collaboration platform for the semiconductor ecosystem, and served as its Chief Executive Officer from December 2021 to May 2025.
Her work at Merck included areas such as scientific innovation, data, digital technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Earlier Leadership Roles
Before becoming Merck’s Chief Science & Technology Officer, Matz served as Vice President, Planarization at EMD Electronics from October 2019 to June 2021. She earlier held senior roles at Versum Materials and Air Products across speciality materials and electronics businesses.
Matz holds a PhD in Chemistry from Washington State University.
The two appointments divide responsibilities across Philips’ technology leadership, with Partovi taking an enterprise-wide AI mandate and Matz overseeing the broader innovation and technology agenda.
