How to play Powerball

Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Depending on local laws, players may also be able to purchase tickets online.

Players select five white-ball numbers from 1 to 69 and one red Powerball number from 1 to 26. They can also add Power Play for an additional $1, which can increase non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X.

Players who don’t want to choose their own numbers can select a Quick Pick and have the lottery terminal generate them.

To win the jackpot, a ticket must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. If no ticket matches all six numbers, the jackpot rolls over to the next drawing.

Do you have to be a U.S. citizen or resident to play Powerball?

You do not have to be a U.S. citizen or resident to buy a Powerball ticket, according to Powerball’s FAQ.

Players must meet the legal age requirement in the jurisdiction where they purchase the ticket. International visitors who meet those requirements can buy tickets while visiting participating jurisdictions and can claim prizes if they win, although taxes may apply.
