Sony Offers Up to US$400 for Unused PS5s via Back Market Trade-In Push

Your PS5 has sat untouched under the telly since you finished Astro Bot. Now your phone buzzes, and it’s Sony asking whether you’d like to sell it. As first spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror, PlayStation is sending notifications to people who have the PlayStation app on their phones, and they point US owners to a cash trade-in run by refurb marketplace Back Market.

The headline figure is US$400. According to Push Square, that’s the most on offer, for a base PS5 console with two DualSense controllers, depending on their overall condition.

The reveal set off an argument about why a platform holder would want consoles back at all:

The US$400 Figure Needs a Grade 0 PS5 and Two DualSense Pads

Read the fine print before you start boxing anything up. Notebookcheck reports that the US$400 estimate covers a “PS5 Standard console with two or more controllers in Grade 0 condition.” Grade 0 means pristine. Most launch consoles that have spent four years collecting dust and pet hair won’t get there.

Several things change what you’re actually offered. Back Market uses professional refurbishers to assess devices, with valuations depending on factors including console model, storage capacity, physical condition and included accessories. Back Market’s own US listing for the PS5 Digital Edition puts that model’s ceiling lower, at up to $380.

The process itself is simple. You request an initial valuation online before shipping your hardware for inspection. Back Market says postage is free, and it promises a direct deposit within 5 business days once the refurbisher has signed off on your console.

Sony Hasn’t Announced a Separate PS5 Trade-In Campaign

This isn’t a brand-new scheme. Techtroduce notes that Sony has not separately announced a new PS5-specific promotional campaign. What’s new is Sony pushing it straight to players’ phones. The Back Market tie-up itself goes back a while: Back Market operates the trade-in program after Sony announced a partnership with the company in 2024.

Until now, that partnership has been about PS4 owners. Under the existing Trade In & Trade Up offer, you get the trade-in value for your PS4 (up to $150) plus a US$50 voucher for PlayStation Direct. Back Market’s help pages say the program runs until December 31, 2026. Don’t mix the two up. The new PS5 nudge is a straight cash sale, and nobody has reported a voucher attached.

Microsoft Sent Xbox Series X|S Owners the Same Message First

Sony isn’t the first to try this. Recently, through Best Buy, Microsoft encouraged gamers to trade in their neglected Xbox Series X and S systems. Two console makers asking for idle hardware back within weeks of each other isn’t a coincidence.

Sony hasn’t explained its reasoning, but the timing tells you plenty. New hardware has gotten pricier: Notebookcheck points out that several price increases have made new units more expensive, even as GTA 6 may boost sales. A console sitting in a cupboard earns Sony nothing. Put it in the hands of a second-hand buyer and that buyer starts spending on PS Plus and on GTA 6 through the PS Store, which lands later this month.

Our view: if you’ve got a launch PS5 that you genuinely don’t touch, plus a spare pad in good nick, this is a fair way to get money back on a five-year-old machine. You won’t have to haggle with strangers on Marketplace either. Just don’t plan your budget around US$400. Expect a scuffed console with one controller to come in well under the headline number, and treat the online quote as a starting point.

The PS5 Notifications Are Going to US Players Only

Every report so far, from Push Square to Notebookcheck, describes the app notifications going to players in the United States. The valuations quoted are all from Back Market’s US site, in US dollars. No one has confirmed anything similar for New Zealand or Australia, so don’t go looking for a PS5 buyback prompt in your PlayStation app here.

If you’re in the US, the quote is the bit that matters. Back Market says that once you’re quoted, you have to transfer your data and ship your device for free within 21 days.
