U.S. searches for “home decor” stay even across the calendar, then rise twice, first in the middle of the year and again in the fall. The midyear bump lines up with summer refreshes. The autumn lift follows holiday planning and shopping.
Two peaks hand sellers a pair of buying windows each year, and a different motive drives each one. Summer shoppers set out to freshen rooms they live in. Fall shoppers ready their homes for the holidays. Interest holds through the quieter months between those surges, which lets a store keep décor on hand year-round and deepen inventory before each surge arrives.
Home décor spans a wide spread of goods, from wall art to ceiling fans. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics sorts baskets, mirrors, silk flowers, book ends, paintings, wall hangings, vases, plant stands, wreaths, clocks, and fireplace equipment and accessories into household decorative items in its Consumer Expenditure Survey. The agency files lighting in the same group, from chandeliers and floor lamps to recessed fixtures, sconces, track lights, table lamps, and ceiling fans. Area rugs, carpet squares, drapes, curtains, blinds, and shades fall under a heading the agency calls floor and window coverings, and the survey counts custom and ready-made window treatments alike.
The roster runs from tabletop accents to fixtures overhead and coverings underfoot, which means one category can answer a small touch-up or a fuller room makeover. A store can tune its assortment to each peak’s motive, pushing pieces that brighten a room in summer and holiday-ready goods as fall arrives. Steady baseline interest between the two swells trims the risk of leftover stock once a peak passes.
Breadth on that scale lets a seller rotate merchandise across both seasonal swells without leaving the category. A retailer who limits décor to the holidays forfeits the whole summer climb.
