Five people were killed after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane operated by 21 Air overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, according to officials. The Boeing 767-300, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The aircraft overran the airport’s diagonal runway at around 2 p.m. ET (1800 GMT), struck multiple vehicles and caught fire, sending thick smoke into the air. The crash prompted the closure of all runways and taxiways and a ground stop at the airport.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene as emergency crews battled the blaze and assessed those affected. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board is also gathering information.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed that an Amazon Air aircraft operated by 21 Air was involved in an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport.
“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details,” Nantel said, adding that Amazon was working closely with local authorities and officials to determine what happened.
“Our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved,” she said, adding that the company was doing everything possible to support those affected.
