A shiny trophy and a whole lot of glory aren’t the only things that the winners of the U.S. Open get to look forward to.
The ongoing tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, which will wrap up on Sunday with the men’s singles final, offers some pretty significant prize money to those who take home the championship. This year, the total pool bumped up to a record $108 million, the largest player compensation package in professional tennis history.
So how does the money break down?
The finals competitions began on Friday, with Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova winning the the Women’s Doubles match against Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery. The next day, Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski, won the men’s doubles over Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz.
Several other finals matches have yet to crown their winners as of the afternoon of Sept. 12, including the Women’s Singles Final, slated for Saturday, in which the current top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will face off against No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina. The Men’s Singles Final, which will take place on Sunday, is a match between No. 8-seeded Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev, the No. 1 seed.
The winners of the singles finals will each go home with $5,500,000 while the runners-up will get $2,800,000 each.
But players don’t have to make it to the end to take home winnings. All who make it to the qualifying round of 128 get prize money. Semifinalists in the men’s and women’s singles matches each earn $1,450,000 while quarterfinalists bring home $780,000. Those in the round of 128 take home $32,000 per player.
For doubles, the top men’s and women’s teams take home $1,000,000 per team, while the runners-up earn $500,000. Semifinalists get $250,000 while quarterfinalists take home $125,000.
The total compensation pool is up 20% from last year’s $90 million total winnings. Craig Tiley, CEO of United States Tennis Association, previously said that the increases represent a “multi-year investment in athletes.”
“We are proud to deliver record-setting prize money and expanded player benefits as well as providing a new platform to work together with players,” Tiley said in a statement.
