Notes:

  • Tonight’s Starting XI averages 59.3 caps heading into the match.
  • Seven of the starters have FIFA Women’s World Cup and/or Olympic experience: Lindsey Heaps, Emily Fox, Rose Lavelle, Tierna Davidson, Trinity Rodman, Alyssa Thompson and Sophia Wilson.
  • Spain’s relatively recent ascension to the top of the women’s game is one factor that has contributed to the USA and Spain having faced each other only four times in their histories.
  • The USA won the first three games: 1-0 in Alicante, Spain at the start of 2019, 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Reims, France, and 1-0 at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup in Harrison, N.J.
  • Spain won the most recent meeting, picking up its first-ever victory over the USA in 2022, winning 2-0 in Pamplona, Spain, and then went on to win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand, putting La Roja atop the world for the first time.
  • With her cap today, Lavelle ties Julie Ertz for 34th most caps in USWNT history with 123.
  • This is the first time this combination of players (Fox, Davidson, Wesley, Patterson) will start a match on the backline together. They are backed by Dickey between the posts.
  • Should Mallory Swanson play on Oct. 10, it will mark 730 days between U.S. Women’s National Team appearances. She currently has 103 caps and 38 goals, which puts her in 17th all-time on the USA’s all-time goal scorer list at the age of 28. Should she play in D.C., it would mark 791 days since the 2024 Olympic gold medal game, a match in which she scored the game-winning goal.

STARTING XI NOTES:

Lindsey Heaps, 32, earns her 179th cap, 139th start and it will be her 46th game captaining the U.S. She currently has 40 career goals, good for 16th all-time in U.S. history.

Rose Lavelle, 30, earns her 123rd cap and 103rd start. Her 123 appearances are good for 34th most caps in USWNT history, tied with Julie Ertz.

Emily Fox, 27, earns her 79th cap and 67th start. The Ashburn, Virginia native played the final 210 minutes of the 2026 SheBelieves Cup, playing her first two full 90-minute international matches since October of 2025. She played two more full-90 matches in the April window vs. Japan and split the Brazil matches, playing the full 90 in the first match and just the first half of the second.

Tierna Davidson, 27, earns her 71st cap and 55th start after returning to U.S. play from year-long injury earlier this year. In her most recent U.S. appearance, Davidson played a full 90 minutes in the June 6 match vs. Brazil.

Sophia Wilson, 25, earns her 64th cap and 45th start as she returns for her third USWNT camp after giving birth to her daughter. Wilson’s most recent match before the 2026 April window for the U.S. was on Oct. 27, 2024, vs. Iceland. Wilson is the 18th mother to play for the USWNT. She scored on June 6 vs. Brazil to become the ninth woman to score as a mother (590 days after her most recent goal before that which was on Oct. 24, 2024, vs. Iceland). The eight other players who have scored as a mom are Alex Morgan (with 16 goals as a mom), Joy Fawcett (13 goals), Danielle Fotopoulos (5), Amy Rodriguez (4), Jessica McDonald (2), Kate Markgraf (1), Kristine Lilly (1) and Tina Ellertson (1).

Trinity Rodman, 24, earns her 58th cap and 36th start. The forward will take the pitch for the U.S. at her club’s home stadium – doing so for the first time in over two years (and just the second time overall) as she missed last year’s match at Audi Field due to injury. The last time Rodman played in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. was on July 16, 2024, vs. Costa Rica, in the final match before the USA departed for the 2024 Olympics.

Alyssa Thompson, 21, earns her 33rd cap and 21st start. Should her sister Gisele enter the match while Thompson is still on the field, this would be their ninth match played together — three short of the record 12 matches the Mewis sisters played together.

Lily Yohannes, 18, earns her 21st cap and her 14th start. The youngest player on the team, Yohannes was six years old and still living in the United States in Virginia (four years before her family’s move to the Netherlands) when captain and fellow starter Lindsey Heaps earned her first cap in 2013.

Avery Patterson, 24, earns her 15th cap and 10th start. This is Patterson’s second consecutive start after playing a full 90 minutes in the June 9 shutout win over Brazil.

Claudia Dickey, 26, earns her 12th cap and 12th start. She has earned eight shutouts and 11 wins across her 11 caps thus far for the USWNT.

Kennedy Wesley, 25, earns her 8th cap and sixth start for the USWNT. In her last appearance, Wesley played a full 90 minutes en route to a shutout win over Brazil. On April 17 vs. Japan, Wesley subbed on at the half and scored her first international goal and earned her first international assist.
