Targeting AI & Nephrology is extending its activities into hands-on applications of artificial intelligence and point-of-care ultrasound in nephrology.

PARIS, France – September 15, 2026 – Artificial intelligence in medicine is rapidly moving beyond large language models, data analysis and prediction. One of its emerging applications is at the patient’s bedside, where AI can assist physicians with medical imaging and point-of-care ultrasound.
On September 16 in Paris, this transition from discussing AI to testing its practical applications will be explored during the third Ultrasound in Nephrology training program.
The initiative is part of the broader activities developed around Targeting AI & Nephrology, which brings together nephrologists, researchers, healthcare professionals and technology experts to examine how artificial intelligence can be responsibly integrated into kidney care.
What can AI actually do in ultrasound?
For nephrologists, this is becoming an increasingly practical question.
Point-of-care ultrasound, or POCUS, can provide information directly at the bedside across several areas relevant to nephrology, including the kidneys and urinary tract, heart and lungs, vascular access, Doppler assessment and volume status.
New generations of ultrasound systems are now integrating AI-assisted functions designed to support image acquisition, optimize selected settings and facilitate certain measurements.
The objective is not to replace clinical expertise. It is to investigate whether AI can reduce some of the technical barriers to ultrasound, support physicians during image acquisition and help move more efficiently from the image to clinically useful information.
Putting the technology into physicians’ hands
The September 16 program has therefore been designed around practical experience.
Participants will rotate through small-group workshops covering renal and bladder ultrasound, arteriovenous fistula and Doppler assessment, cardiac and pulmonary ultrasound, and clinical cases.
Rather than simply watching a demonstration, physicians will have the opportunity to take the ultrasound probe in hand, acquire images, discuss their interpretation and explore new technological capabilities directly with experts.
This hands-on approach reflects a broader direction for Targeting AI & Nephrology: moving beyond discussions about what artificial intelligence could do and examining what it can realistically contribute to everyday medical practice.
“We have spent several years discussing what AI could bring to nephrology. Now we also want physicians to test these technologies themselves and ask a very simple question: does this really help us in clinical practice?” said Dr. Marvin Edeas, Université Paris Cité.
“Ultrasound is particularly interesting because it sits directly at the interface between technology, clinical examination and immediate decision-making. AI may help make some aspects of ultrasound easier and faster, but these technologies need to be confronted with the reality of clinical practice.”
From generative AI to real-world clinical applications
Targeting AI & Nephrology has progressively explored different dimensions of artificial intelligence relevant to kidney medicine, including medical imaging, predictive approaches, transplantation, clinical data, generative AI, large language models, medical education and responsible implementation.
The ultrasound initiative extends this strategy into another practical field: AI-assisted medical imaging at the point of care.
It also reflects a wider ambition to create continuity between scientific meetings and activities conducted throughout the year.
The goal is to build bridges between AI research, technological innovation, physician education and real-world clinical practice.
The central question is therefore evolving.
It is no longer simply:“What can AI do?”
It is increasingly:“Where does AI provide genuine clinical value, and how should physicians be trained to use it?”
For Targeting AI & Nephrology, AI-assisted ultrasound provides a particularly relevant environment in which to explore these questions, with the technology in the physician’s hands.
