A woman entered the Malibu, California, property of former Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff late on Sept. 11, prompting Harris’ security personnel to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to multiple reports.
Security personnel stopped the woman before she reached the home, the Los Angeles Times reported. Harris and Emhoff were not at the property at the time.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to the property at about 10:30 p.m., according to Lt. Jason Duron, of the Malibu station. The woman agreed to leave voluntarily and was not arrested.
“We are stepping up patrols of the property to be safe,” Duron told the Los Angeles Times.
Why Harris’ security has been an issue
The incident comes after changes to Harris’ security arrangements following her departure from the White House.
Former vice presidents typically receive six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. Former President Joe Biden extended Harris’ protection, but President Donald Trump revoked the extension in August 2025, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Los Angeles and California law enforcement agencies subsequently helped coordinate security for Harris. The Los Angeles Police Department ended its involvement in September 2025 after criticism over the resources being used to protect the former vice president, the Times reported.
The California Highway Patrol continues to assist Harris’ security detail, but CHP officers were not at the Malibu property at the time of the Sept. 11 incident.
Harris’ Malibu home
Harris and Emhoff purchased the 4,000-square-foot Malibu home in December 2025 for $8.15 million, according to The Independent. The property is in the secluded Point Dume neighborhood.
In a post to X on Sept. 11, Harris said she and Emhoff were commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a visit to Pepperdine University’s “Waves of Flags” installation. The school’s main campus is in Malibu.
A new poll from Focaldata/Financial Times, released over Labor Day weekend, showed Harris leading Democratic contenders for a potential presidential run in 2028. Harris held a very comfortable lead with 29% support from likely Democratic primary voters in the poll conducted from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2.
